Hello parents,
Has anyone gone through MRI and EEG? How was it? Any kids on medication and what are the side effects? MY son's neurologists has scheduled the above and I'm curious!!!She thinks my boy has silent seizures!! Ever heard of that?

Hi! We have recently had both. You can feel free to look at my compostitions. My son is having silent seizures but his MRI shows a normal brain so far. So no permanent damage-at least not yet. His seizures did show up on the one hour EEG in the doctor's office. So you can just imagine how many he would have had in the 24 hour one. Good Luck! I hope your kiddo is cooperative. Mine was if I described everything to him beforehand.

Daniel had both, and several different EEG's. We had to sedate him for the MRI, he was to afraid to cooperate. The EEG's went so much better. The neurologist did a sleeping EEG, a one-hour waking EEG, and a 24-hour EEG. Daniel had no trouble with any of them, the pediatric neurologist and his staff really knew how to talk him through it all. I have heard of silent seizures, but I don't know anything much about the meds for them or the side effects. Daniel doesn't have siezures, thank God, but the MRI and EEG's did point to some brain damage. The neurologist had us treat that with vitamins, and Daniel has made wonderful progress.

We've done both a few times and we sedated for all of them as this was helpful. Did not hava a 24 hour EEG which I think is important and I believe if you keep the hands and mind busy with other things, you can accomplish it. My son's MRI and EEG showed nothing yet, my son has full blown epilepsy. He eventually presented with gran mal seizures as he got older, but also continued to have clonic or "silent". We utilized phenabarbitol and he had an allergic reaction. Then tegretol which he kept having breakthroughs despite raising the dosages. We then put him on depakote which was great for the seizures but he packed on serious weight which is common with this drug. we took him off a few years later and no seizures so far ("touch wood"). It's been 4 years seizure free. My neurologist informed me that alot of our kiddos do not have a positive EEG despite the fact that they are having seizures. What my group of friends have found useful is to videotape the episodes and then have the doctor watch it. I know its tricky but if you have it out...you can just grab and go. For my one friend this was the key to her son getting proper treatment after a year of testing and back -n-forth to docs and now he is doing great! GOOD LUCK!
