Dental Issues....

Stephan, my youngest has barely any enamel on his teeth and now we are looking at caps, braces, extractions, root canals etc....He is slated for oral surgery at the hospital Dec. 1st. The Dentist who specializes in Special Needs has a cut off age of 12 in her practice....Stephan is 15 but as a favor to the Orthodontist who elected himself my Ombudsman (his words not mine!) he got her to see him and she is willing to take care of him. She said she'd help us until he is 18 but then what????
Where do our kids go when they grow up? Who takes special needs adults???
Does any one else have stories of hard to find dentists who will take their time with our kids and does any one have older kids who are not considered kids any more and where do they go??
Here in NC UNC has a dental school and take high maintenance kids...and adults... when we lived in NY in Rochester the Eastman School of Dentistry also specialized in special needs and really took fantastic care of the boys. But what if no one has that where they are???

On a side note, the nurse at the office today said that half of the bills would go through our medical since he will be put out and hospitalized as an outpatient.... NC passed a bill recently that prohibits any medical insurance from denying the coverage even if it is considered "dental" on the basis of if the person being treated has special needs and must be put out for dental procedures! She handed me the letter explaining it all so that BC/BS can't say "oh no, that's not our problem!" Whew on that at least!!!!

Re: Dental Issues....

I am glad you have someone now that is good with your son. I think you will probably have to find a oral surgeon when he ages out of this one since he will probably continue to require being sedated for routine care and such. Good luck with all that work, hope it goes well. That is awesome that they are filing with your medical ins. for you. I hope they have a law like that in TN.
