Kids who are non-verbal...

I was wondering how many of you have kids who are non-verbal? I have found it to be like finding a needle in a haystack in my state. I am looking to network, bounce ideas, hear lesson learned, what has worked, what has not etc..  My son, Ryan, is 11, has autism and is non-verbal. He has three forms of communication PECS, PSE using ASL and Pathfinder. I have been criticized by professionals in the past about Ryan having so many forms of communication and all not being 100%. I point of view is simple... everyone is not going to understand all forms but at least him has a Plan "A", Plan "B" and a Plan "C" to fall back on.

Re: Kids who are non-verbal...

Hey there!  My son will be four in July and he is nonverbal.  I think it's great that your son has so many ways to communicate.  We are starting to get a few words that are basically things he wants-eat, drink, up..and he has some sign language.  What are PSE and Pathfinder?  My son wants to communicate so badly sometimes that it breaks my heart.

Thanks!

Kristin

My 4 year old is nonverbal.  He has a few words, but most of them are one-hit wonders.  He can sign a few things, but again, they're not consistent.  He is currently being trained in PECS.  (P.S. -- I'm a newbie, too!)

Hello my son is 11 and in the last for years has been gaining some language skills...but you still cant have a conversation with him...so I consider him to still be nonverbal with some echolalia.
We have done PECS, TEACCH, and Augmentative Communication.

Re: Kids who are non-verbal...

My son just turned 15 and the best communication tool he had was a Dynavox system. It's kind of like PECS but puts words to it as well and gives them multiple menus to choose from to communicate with. Stephan was earlier on PECS and they did try sign language but he didn't care for that. He now is off the Dynavox and uses more verbalizations as well as types via computer now and Alpha Smart.

Re: Kids who are non-verbal...

What exactly is "pre-verbal"?

My son is 4, and I'm honestly not sure if he'd be considered nonverbal or what... He's got maybe.. 10 words he uses consistantly (no, don't, stop, ow, eat, drink, horsie, snake...etc) but pretty much all you hear out of him is the occasional word, some babbling when he's excited, and a lot of screaming/moaning/groaning.
