Come and get your son....

Hi all~
So this AM the school calls and says Stephan is having a very bad morning. Screaming, scratching, fighting and needing to be restrained by 2 aides. They told me to come and get him. I told them no. I WOULD come, with weights for him and a body sox but I am not about to come and bring him home. That would only reinforce the behavior in him getting what he wants. I mean, he IS in a special ed. room and so they need to deal with it.
I went in and put a weight around his shoulders and then he enclosed himself in the body sox and sure enough, 5 minutes later he is calm as anything and ready to start the day again. I was so frustrated. Albeit that the teacher was out today and so Stephan had to deal with a new teacher for the day but any way you slice it I thought it was wrong to tell me to come get him and take him home because they don't want to handle him when he isn't "perfect" I mean, when are ANY of us that?!?!?

Good for you!  You are right that picking him up would only reinforce the behavior and teach him that all he has to do is scratch and scream and he can go home.  Sounds like his teachers need more training in what is calming for your son.  They probably need their own set of weights and body sox to keep at school too....

Re: Come and get your son....

I had read about the weighted items for soothing and grounding a child, but not about the body sox. Very interesting. Her mommy doesn't think it would work, not sure I understand her reasoning. I think it would be worth trying, but dang, they are so expensive. Perhaps I'll get out to the fabric shop this week and see how much lycra and velcro cost and try putting one together myself if it's any cheaper. But not till this migraine lets up some.

Thank you for the links. I have sent an email to the middle one to inquire how much shipping costs would add to the price. I loved their videos of people dancing in the body socks!
