it's potty time

well past potty time.  my 9 year old autistic boy is potty trained.  in school and outside our home he goes on the toilet.  home is another story.  he very rarely makes it to the toilet.  he doesnt even try.  he will just go right where he is standing.  we have tried everything to change this behavior.  the thing is i know he can do it.  if he needed my help or couldnt control himself, i would deal with it.  this i can not deal with.
we've put him in time out, we have made him clean it up, we have taken things away...............he laughs  (especially at me)    i really dont know what else to do.  any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated

Re: it's potty time

what are his biggest reinfourcers? I would try to put in place some postive stragies.. like checking pants every so often and rewarding him with dry pants and taking him to the bathroom and holding his biggest renforcers and prompting him to go .. when he is successful - and he will be - have his favorite thing for him and just over praise him..hope this helps and really sending out hugs this is a very hard issue and takes lots of time and effort.

Re: it's potty time

lol we are also struggling with this, Anthony is only 4 but the past week his teacher has been sending notes home saying his pull has been dry at school but when he gets home it's all different. The only thing he wants to do when I try to take him to the potty is play in the water.... lol So I am gonna wait awhile then try it again LOL

Re: it's potty time

hi   thanks for your advice and support.  we have tried the reinforcer idea......just the other night we took his tv away for p'ing on the floor  and he didnt get it back until 2 mornings later.  he cried and cried.   he got the tv back and he did it again.  i am not sure if he just doesnt get the whole punishment thing or what.  it is so frustrating and has to be one of the biggest issues we tackle with on a daily basis
his school offers a behavorist to come to your home and work with you for a cycle of 6 weeks, hopefully this will help.
thanks again

Re: it's potty time

This will probably sound crazy but.....I heard an adult speaker who is on the spectrum (I can't remember her name right now).  She said what has helped when she was a child and also has worked with some of her clients is acting like you love the negative behavior.

She said, as a child, all they positive reinforcement/attention freaked her out so she did
whatever she could to make it stop.  She wouldn't use the bathroom because  it brought on attention.  She also said she has used this technique to get institutionalized people to stop feces smearing.  She and the staff made a BIG deal about about she loved the undesirable behavior and after a few occurrences it stopped.

Wow, if that actually works, it would be worth it to stop the feces smearing!!

Re: it's potty time

Well I'm frustrated and Hopefull with this one too....As my son was finally pee trained at 9 years old...but absolutely refuses to have a bm on the toilet. But the hopeful part, is while my other son was in the hospital...my dh was able to get him to poop on the potty....of course sometimes they will do something for others they wont do for mom.....so we continue to keep at it. Boy I would love to have to buy another diaper factory...I think I've bought enough pull ups and diapers....to own at leat a couple of them by now! LOL
