Hyperlexia is a condition in which precocious reading is coupled with speech delays. Percocious reading is learning to read without formal instruction before age 5. Children with Hyperlexia are usually fascinated or obsessed with the alphabet letters, numbers or signs.

Hyperlexia is not well recognized and is typically diagnosed by a speech-language pathologist but other specialists such as a developmental pediatrician or neuropsychologist can also recognize and give a diagnosis.

There are different views of how Hyperlexia is perceived or classified. Views include seeing Hyperlexia as a savant skill of Autism, a distinct Autistic Spectrum Disorder, a standalone disorder, a communication disorder, or giftedness. Some believe Hyperlexia to be a stand alone disorder while others believe it is a splinter skill of Autism.
