Autism presents early in children
Wednesday, September 05, 2007

If a child does not appear to be developing in a typical manner, parents may wonder if he or she may have autism.

Autism and other autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) cannot be determined by blood tests or X-rays. A diagnosis is based upon the way the child uses language, interacts socially, engages in problem behavior and performs certain movements. If a child does have autism, it is important to identify it as early as possible so treatment and intervention can begin.

Some of the first signs that the child might not be developing typically include a lack of eye contact, no pointing or gesturing by 12 months of age, no babbling or no inflection in voice tone when babbling, no use of words by 12 months, no use of phrases of two or more words by 2 years, no make-believe play by 2 years and a loss of language and social skills.
