I wonder about Breast Feeding
by LivsDad on 05.14.08 - public - 135 visits

Ever since the 80's breast feeding has been on the rise, so has ASD. People are at the top of the food chain... Even above sharks. We are now supposed to govern how much shark & other top of the food chain fish we consume due to mercury & I am sure other things. What about breast milk for infants. Has anybody done a study on breast milk. Could breast milk for US moms be potentially harmful. Sorry, if this seems to be out there.... But, I always am wondering

I'm sure everyone clicked on your post to discourage you from trying to breastfeed! That, and after reading YOUR comments, to ask you to please, not engage in cannibalism. Humans may not be as nutritious as they appear. Thank you. ;)

I'm am way behind the curve here but going back about 8 or so years ago the Dr. did some research about Moms who breastfed but who also got an MMR vaccine (or part of the MMR vaccine) right after giving birth OR who received the MMR in their mid to late teens. The incidince of autism for the children of these Moms was VERY High! Check this out http://www.planetc1.com/search/an-autism-and-vaccine-link.html

You got ton's on this one..but many Mom's with ADS kids are now testing breat milk for mercury levels before feeding a second child. Remember also..some people can eat mercury and rid it from the body..our kids cannot..that's the biggest issue I see. While I feel I added to my son's mercury burden...it was bar non his shots that shut him down to ground 0 over night....

Quite frankly, almost anything including mom's milk can be harmful if the environmental contaminants are there. Reality is (from a midwife's perspective here), I'd be far more concerned about what mom was eating while pregnant, since the placenta acts as a sponge to absorb and pass through everything, and breast tissue acts as a filter and blocks a certain amount of toxins from passing into the breastmilk. Mother's milk still contains a formulation unmatched by man-made formula in meeting and changing to meet a baby's nutritional needs. There are allergy factors to various formula ingredients to consider, as well as the possible (increased) exposure to bisphenol-A through the water used to mix the formula, not to mention the baby bottles which leach it into the liquids they're holding. Although it seems you're pretty much at risk no matter which direction you go, I'd still err on the side of caution and say breast milk is best.

I did both, breastfed/pumped (he couldn't nurse) and supplemented with soy formula. I think I was toxic due to working in the dental field with exposure to heavy metals and chemicals. But as others have sad it is one evil vs. another. So I have to agree that breastmilk is still best.

There was a study over a year ago that I read that testing breast milk for contaminents. It was overwhelming the toxins that are being passed on via breastmilk. But like others said - it does have nutrients you can't duplicate. Catch22. My son nursed for a very long time ---- and I wonder if it didn't make things even worse.

Absolutely, slhh130, chemicals really do need to be researched further. Medicines, too. People in, for instance, the cancer community, push for meds to come to market faster, but sometimes, I think meds come to market too fast, even with all the controls we have now. Oh, well. In the best of all worlds, no one would ever get sick, crops would be easy to grow, and the food supply would always be safe...

Well we have a strong genetic basis for our autism issues at my house but I am sure the switch had to flipped by something in our environment. When I was pregnant with my son I worked in an agriculture lab and was exposed to all sorts of chemicals, pesticides, etc. They were supposedly safe according to their MSDSs. I think the country needs to do more research on what they consider to be"safe".

My friends son a a stroke also, but it was after he was given his regular vaccines and then the ones he was late on...a total of 8 in one visit, and he had a cold, but no fever.

It's a really good question, and you're right. We do absorb plenty of pesticides and toxic metals, both from our diets and from contact in the environment. All four of my kids were breastfed, but I was really careful about what I ate. I wonder if moms on an organic diet have a lower rate of ASD in their kids? Truly, though, I was most careful with my diet with Daniel, my first, than I was with the other ones, and he's the only one on the spectrum (irony! irony!). Still, I believe the cause of his symptoms may not be the same as other kids on the spectrum... A big part of his symptoms is that he had a stroke in utero due to an abruption. That doesn't cover all of his symptoms, though. Maybe it matters more for some kids, kids who are more neurologically fragile either from genetic or environmental influences, so a smaller amount of toxic stuff would have a larger impact? Don't worry about being controversial, most of us here love to think about new ideas.

Formula has it's own problem such as the allergies mentioned above, chemicals from processing, all the toxins of our environment. There is not substitute for breast milk to help the developing immune system. Our food supply is more processed today and full of chemicals. I just think of the arsenic in the chicken feed and the pesticides on other foods.

Both of mine were bottle fed. My son did wonderfully. I am not sure if formula bugged my daughter though. She seemed better on soy. I dunno.

I do believe that mercury and other toxins can be passed through breastmilk. However, there is a dilemma because there are no formulas that can identically substitute for the perfectly designed composition of nutrients and fatty acids etc...in breastmilk. Also, many of the ingredients in formulas (casein, soy, corn syrup) set children up to have allergies......

@ 4muskateers - Right, it could be esp if you ate lots of sushi. But, pesticides, air pollutants, chems, no matter... I don't think any other species pollutes itself more than peps.

It may well depend on the diet if the mom's
