Little drummer boy..

I was very annoyed starting early this summer because apparently a kid of my neighbors decided to take up the drums. The drums were very loud and started thumping at odd and inconvenient hours. As said, I was annoyed and figured it was probably just a phase, like when I tried to learn the guitar. I actually heard one of my other neighbors try to combat the noise with a juvenile attempt of out-sounding the drums with a morning talk show. Clearly not a good tactic, twice as much noise was created.

So coming back from traveling and being on sabbatical I was surprised to still hear the drums. I figured the phase would have passed by now.

Then one early morning I heard the drumming again. This time it was different or maybe I just listened a little closer. It wasn't just drumming but also humming and a bit of screeching. The little drummer neighbor is autistic. I knew this instantly. The drums are therapy. After weeks of hearing him not getting better at percussion but instead repeating the same thumps... I understood.

So yet another lesson has been learned. If a kid is drumming.. it's not always noise.

Your brother is a great uncle, and brother. My youngest brother is really in sync with Michelle. Of course he is just a big kid himself. He trys to do alot with her when he is around. Great story.

Ah, that all of our neighbors could "hear" what your brother heard.....I wonder what other things being Liv's uncle have taught him? He's a great listener.

Sounds like you have a great brother there. It always amazes me how many people are indirectly affected by ASD. I hate the disorder, but really appreciate the compassion people develop when they have a friend or relative on the spectrum, or with any disability. Give your brother a pat on the back from me and my family, will you?
