EmilyL's Bio

Hi, all!  My name is Emily, and I live with my husband of 21 years and our 4 children and numerous pets.  Our oldest has high-functioning autism.  The rest of the kids are, apparently, normal.  I think that siblings can really help a kid with autism, but no doubt there are some costs to the NT siblings of children with autism.  That said, Daniel is very kind and helpful to his siblings and the opportunity to be socially competent at home is good for him.  I just hope to help him be socially competent in the wider world, too.

I wanted to get these pictures in early, but as my middle name is, "Not-A-Technological-Wonder," (hyphenated names are so stylish these days) it took me a while. The computer wouldn't cooperate.

Anyway. Daniel wasn't quite sure why we were going to church half an hour early last Sunday, even though we explained it to him. It wasn't the usual routine, so instead of waiting outside for pictures, he went zipping in to the tail end of the previous service. No problem. I fished him out as soon as people started coming out. Out we went for pics. It was time, finally, to baptize our youngest, and judging from his expression in the photos, it was not a moment too soon... In the photo with this composition, I'm the only one who can't see what he's doing, as I'm holding him. Looks a little like a leprechaun, doesn't he?

The priest called us all, "The Claaaaan!" throughout the rehearsal on Saturday, through the church's pictures of us, (sorry, don't have a copy of those, they go on the bulletin board at church), and pretty much through the whole event. ALL of us stood up with Michael at the front of the church. Daniel got a little agitated at first, (I squeezed his hand to calm him) but he started cracking up when the priest poured water into the baptismal font. I'm pretty sure I don't want to know why. The rector (that means, "head priest") saw Daniel laughing and started laughing, too. Nobody else thought the water was funny. Go figure.

Anyway, after the service, we went home and did our traditional Sunday afternoon event: yard work. After the storms, there were plenty of downed branches, and the males of the family rejoiced in cutting them up and attacking each other with the sticks.

A good time was had by all.

We don't have a course for first communion, but we do for "Confirmation," which is when older teenagers are recognised as adults, with adult spiritual responsabilities in the church. Pretty much, the church where we attend allows you to take communion if you can chew.

Hve your children made their communion yet? I was raised Catholic, so we did...Our Lady of Peace has a homeschool CCD course for special needs and homeschooled children...they send you the materials and you send them back...then they send you a test and you return it wait for the grade...and they set the date for your communion...I am waiting to hear if I can start the boys...this church is 3 hours away from us.

Too funny! I'm glad you enjoyed the day! We went to a christening last weekend. My son and nephew were the first kids to offically splash in the new baptismal font! At first when my nephew went to put his hand in, my son stopped him which my mother who was watching thought was funny. But then she dipped each of their hands in the water and had them bless themselves. so after that they figured it was fine to stick there hands in and play! Kristin

Great...and to have the Rector join in on the laughing too...I remember our baptism...I would only be baptized in the river...so off we went 1/2 the church and all the towns people who were BBQing...Julian, Dante' Victor and myself...all submerged in the river...
