Watching Daniel, pretty hard, I guess! At the beginning of this summer, I had him washing his breakfast things every morning. As the summer progressed, I just did it myself. The schedule was so hectic, I just got it over with. Then, when the school year started, we were getting the kids up early, 6 am, and they had time in the morning to clean up after themselves.
Daniel had completely forgotten the steps involved. I coached him through again, all through the week. By the end of the week, I'm pretty sure he remembered it all, but took every available opportunity to walk away from the sink... Mom distracted by siblings? He's outta there. Dad has conversation with Mom? Off he goes again.
Part of me appreciates the teenage deviousness of this.
The rest of me is appalled to find that doing the chores myself is really bad for my kids' development. I'm quite sure that Daniel's forgetting is only an extreme case, that not being asked to do chores is bad for the rest of them, too.

Sorry, no pictures. Working on a borrowed computer until mine is fixed.

Boy does this hit home. I just pretty much packed my 11 yr old back pack for the the first day of school. He "helped" somewhat, but it was easier just to do it. I know that is baaaad, verrrrry bad. I think I just wanted to ease the stress for him and myself. Tomorrow is his first day in middle school and first day riding the bus in 6 years.

It is hard making them do the chores when it is sooo much faster when you do it yourself and you do it right, lol. I am the worst at this and it has come back to bite me, my eldest is 15 and getting him to do anythng is like pulling teeth. So this time around I am trying to make time for Seoc to do things himself and build independence. But it isn't easy and I have to slap myself sometimes when I get rushed and do things for him.

Julian likes to wash the dishes, just to play with the soap...Here is a list of what Julian has learned to do around the house in the last 4 years... 1...vaccum 2...dust 3...wash dishes 4...make bed 5...fold towels 6...hand shirts after drying 7...start washer 8...start dryer 9...take out trash 10...bathe himself 11...get up and get completely dressed on his own, choosing his own clothes...and they match too. 12...uses his PEC's to communicate with everyone he knows or doesn't. And praise GOD he hasn't forgot anyone of the 12... Daniel will catch on, OH...I show Julian once by example, twice is verbal and three your on your own...and I don't fix what he has done...I did a few times and didn't like the look of disappointment on his face...so how or what ever the out come is he has done his best at the time and with time and practice he will do better.
