We usually have the whole family over for birthdays but after only three days back at school Seoc has a runny nose and the start of a cough, sigh. I also feel it coming on. My grandmother and Aunt couldn't attend because they are both medically fragile.

This year Seoc seemed to get it that it is His birthday!! He was so excited when he woke to find the house decorated with Thomas the train and balloons with numbers on them. He put on his hat and said "All Aboard" and was walking around saying "Surprize!" He started asking for cake and had to wait until Nana came with the cake. I had the camcorder all set up in the corner rolling (so I thought) He blew out his first candle ever before I could get the cake on the table and took a bite right out of the side of the cake! It was priceless. Well the video camera had shut off. AAAAHHHH!!! I did catch some photo's but I am sooo sick we didn't get that moment of video. Instead it recorded all the boring stuff, sigh. He had a wonderful birthday and I will never forget it.

I think I could write a book on this subject but I will spare you all, lol. Besides having sensory issues with food my son also has dysphagia (weakness of the mouth muscles) so he can't feel where the food is in his mouth. He gags and vomits frequently, he stills eats a great deal of purees and slowing getting more table foods. No one wants to eat at the table with him for fear he will vomit, when he starts gagging everyone grabs their plates and run for the hills, lol. Except for Mom who is there to reassure her little one and clean up the mess. We have figured out that he does better with stronger flavors and seasoning helps him know where the food is in his mouth. He does get oral motor therapy on top of speech for the apraxia and dysarthria. One thing I find very odd is he use to Love Mac n' cheese and now he gags on it. He asks for it and gets all excited but the first bite he starts gagging. You can tell he really wants it. How can he go from being able to gobble it down to not being able to tolerate it??? My hubby thinks that maybe one time he had some that wasn't good (maybe at school) and that has ruined it forever. Mine is a pie, cake,chocolate lover, I don't think he is addicted but definately loves the stuff. Luckily he doesn't have any food allergies and today got the results that his yeast and oxalates are fine, yeah!!! No diet for us, yippie!!!

This is going to be Seoc's 2nd year at preschool. Last year he was in an Autism class which was great with wonderful teachers and we love them. He has absolutely no social skills so I have requested he be able to attend the typical (title one) preschool part time. She said they don't do that, it is full time only. So I have to decide if I want him in the special needs class or the typical class but he can't have both, ugh. I don't understand that, why can't he go to the typical preshool like 1 hour a day or something? How is he suppose to learn social skills from other children who don't have any and how is he going to participate in a typical class when he has none? She suggested I go to the parent meeting tom. with the teacher of the typical preschool and give it a try for one day. I was suppose to get a newletter informing me of this meeting but didn't. I am Very frustrated. I know my child can't function in a typical class alone, he needs guidance to participate, initiate social interaction, self help tasks, feeding, and not running off. I told his teacher I don't think he is ready but she urged me to try it and at least get the other teacher's opinion and maybe we could work on reverse inclusion by bringing typical children into her class (which sounds like a better idea). She said they have worked with head start in the past with part time but she doesn't think it is a good fit for Seoc (and I do trust her opinion). She said at the meeting they want to take the children in a different room while the parents fill out paper work. I am already having an anxiety attack. They don't know him, what if he runs off? Pray for me!!! Suggestion please, what has worked for you, what are my rights? Is partial inclusion only in K-12 or is it a myth?

I need help understanding some of the tests results and recommendations from the psych eval. We don't go back until after further testing in Sept. but he sends his report in advance for me to ponder on my own, lol.

Differential Ability Scales (what is that?) He scored in the 30th percentile (slightly delayed range).

Nonverbal Ability score was at the 18th percentile (slightly delayed range). Had difficulty with strategic problem solving and following visual patterns in problem solving. Visual tension also varied somewhat. Nonverbal subtest scores ranged from the 16th to 31st percentiles, which were fairly close together and are in the average to slightly delayed range. Age equivalents are around 2 years, 10 months (he is almost 4).

On the Verbal Ability subtest, Seoc achived a standard score of 81 and a percentile rank of 10. This is in the slightly to moderately delayed range. Picture naming skills fell at the 24th percentile. Verbal communication fell at the 5th percentile. The receptive language portion of the Baily Scales of Infant Development was then used and produced a score at the 26 month level.

Seoc completed the Letter-Word Identification subtest from the Woodcock-Jonson Tests of Achievement. He achieved an age equivalent of 6 years, 8 months and a grade equivalent of 1.3. He has advanced reading skills. This score may be slightly underestimate his ability because  articulation may interfere. He also tested well in visual spatial ability and hand eye coordination.

Recommendations: Language therapy should be a high priority. Work heavily on attention to language and receptive language. Coordinate this with home activities to stimulate receptive language. One example is using a set of toys and asking gradually longer and graually more complex directions to challenge language processing. (What exactly does this mean?)

Whenever possible use visual methods to assist in teaching. This includes manipulatives, pictures, demonstrations, books, computers, and flash cards. (which I already do heavily)

Seoc seems to have absorbing interests (LOL). Work to try to make sure he can switch his attention away from these very quickly by calling a simple direction and becoming more intrusive if needed. (PLEASE  tell me how I am suppose to do that). Also, work to expand interests. For example, it may be helpful to try to challenge his work with visual-design toys. (What does that mean??)

Any input from my foggyrock family  is appreciated as I am confused and not sure how to interpret these results. He has shown great progress and very advanced in some areas but greatly lacking in others.

The U.S. Department of Education (USED) has released proposed regulations for Part B of the Individuals with Disabilities Education ACT (IDEA). The most important change in these regulations is to limit the use of lay advocates in due process hearings, if this regulation goes through, parents will have limited options for representation of their child's case. The public has until July 28, 2008 to submit comments - now is the time for you to let the Bush Administration know how this regulation will negatively affect students with disabilities and that more time is needed to construct a better alternative. We must act together and let our voices be heard or changes will be implemented that will make it more difficult for parents to have their cases heard in court.

The Administration must hear that this proposed regulation to limit the use of non-attorney advocates as counsel for parents has two potentially negative consequences on future court cases. Because of the limited pool of attorneys qualified to serve as experts in this area, this change will mean for many parents that their choice will be either to represent themselves (which puts them at a disadvantage) or foregoing a due process hearing altogether because they cannot afford attorney fees. Consequently, it is premature for USED, without adequate review and consideration of available research data, to propose, through regulatory amendment, such a potentially disruptive change. Also, given the pending Congressional reauthorization of IDEA, it is inappropriate for USED to move forward with this proposed language at this time. More time needs to be given to this issue before regulatory changes are made.

Please endorse NCLD's recommendation to withdraw this proposed change and let the Secretary of Education know this regulation will have deep negative consequences for parents in their fight to advocate for their child's educational rights. Please follow the directions below to submit the draft letter provided or chose to edit the letter with your personal comments.

We had a great 4th of July I decided to take Seoc to the parade. They had all kinds of those blow up things for kids there, of course he didn't want to get on any but he ran around a while. Then we went to a little bistro while wasting time for the parade to start. It of course got busy because everyone else had the same idea. He was getting a little loud and my MIL told him to "Be quite you are embarrassing me" ROFL I said "You are going to have to get over that,lol" She said the man at the table behind me was giving us the look. Here I was thinking he was doing Great. Then we went outside and walked back and forth until it was time for the parade to start. He was actually into it this year. He cheered a few times and when he saw Dora the explorer he said "Boots where are you?" for those who don't watch Dora that is Dora's sidekick and he is always with her, lol. He doesn't miss a thing. Some of the floats were rather loud and he just covered his ears without having a meltdown!!! So after his nap I decided to try the fireworks, again he did wonderfully. I let him run around (when I say around I literally mean around in circles, lol) until the fireworks started and he sat on my lap for the whole fireworks show. We were naming the colors when they would explode and when it was over he clapped and said "Bye fireworks". Last year I would not of thought this possible. It was a wonderful day!!

I asked Seoc this morning if he wanted to go outside and play. He said "Outside, play, car" I said where do you want to go in the car? "He said Park" This is the first where question he has answered. So we went to the park, where he just runs around. It was hot so I asked him if he wanted to go get icecream, of course he does. I took him to McDonald's for the very first time thinking I may be able to get him to play on the play structure. This is something that in the recent past would not happen, he refused to get inside or on anything let alone go down the slide. Today he went as long as I went with him, which is a big start. Thankfully it was not busy or he would not have gone for it. There was a little girl there about his age, he was interested in what she was doing and enjoyed watching her go down the slide. I kept promting him to play with her (to no avail but hay acknowledging her and what she was doing is a big start) She tried really hard to play with him but he didn't bite. After a while my knees where killing me from climbing in that thing and I took a break. He climbed up in it alone but would not come down the slide. I keep promting him telling him he could do it, he was a big boy and the little girl tried too, LOL, she was sooo cute. After a long time of watching her do it he finally did All by himself. This is huge, I off course was jumping for joy and the little girl was also pleased that he finally did it. He has really come a long way!

Being this is our first year dealing with the school system I am still in the dark. I thought the purpose of an extended school year was to prevent regression? I just found out from another parent that they do not provide therapies during the ESY program. So what are we suppose to do for therapy, if your ins. won't pay because they think it is the schools responsibility if it is included in your childs IEP.

Then I found out that the elementary school right next to us has a preschool program. I was lead to believe that the school my child is attending was the only school he could attend. Since I didn't know about the other one we missed registration and it is full. I really want him to go to Kindergarden there and thought the transition would be much easier if he attended preschool there as well.

I am also pushing for inclusion because he really needs it but am afraid of how he will do and does he need an aide and how to get one. It is all so very overwhelming and it does not help when parents are left in the dark about their options.

Any advice appreciated, Thanks for listening to me vent.
